Locating pins and corresponding holes allow the sections to fit together securely, forming the complete spoon-shaped casting cavity. Molten pewter or another low-melting-point metal would have been poured through the opening at the end of the handle. Once cooled, the mould was separated and the newly cast spoon removed and finished by hand.

The mould produces a simple traditional spoon with an oval bowl, plain rounded handle and raised rattail detail to the reverse. Its wonderfully aged surface, workshop marks and dark coppery patina make it a fascinating example of early metalworking history. An excellent collector’s piece for display alongside antique kitchenalia, pewter, traditional tools or metalworking equipment.

No maker’s marks are visible.

Condition
In good antique condition with considerable evidence of age and workshop use.

Both mould halves are present and fit together using the original locating pins. There are scratches, casting marks, knocks, rubbing and areas of oxidation and verdigris throughout. The outer surfaces have developed a dark brown patina, with warmer golden bronze tones visible along the sides and within the mould. There are no obvious cracks or major losses. It is offered as a historical collector’s item and has not been tested for modern casting use. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

Dimensions
H: 5.25 cm × L: 22 cm × W: 6 cm when closed

Date
18th or 19th century

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0693/9302/3204/files/DEC4FEC3-6734-42AE-9BBC-5ABC40B0CB6F.jpg?v=1789663000
https://www.vintagewhiteantiques.com/products/antique-bronze-spoon-mould-for-casting-pewter-18th-19th-century
