Trees and open fields surround him, with a church visible in the distance. The wide moulded border is decorated with raised ears of wheat or grain, giving the plate an attractive agricultural theme.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eMost notably, the plate retains numerous historic metal staple repairs. Before modern ceramic adhesives became widely available, cracked pottery was repaired by drilling small holes on either side of the break and inserting metal staples. This labour-intensive repair suggests that the plate was once valued enough to preserve despite its damage.
