Original Victorian illustrated hardback, Army and Navy Drolleries by Captain T. S. Seccombe, published by Frederick Warne and Co, London, with colour illustrations printed by Kronheim. A large-format comic military and naval humour book with alphabetical descriptions and caricature-style colour plates of soldiers, guards, naval figures and military characters. The decorative blue pictorial cloth cover with gilt title remains very striking, and the internal colour plates have strong decorative appeal for collectors of Victorian illustration, military history, comic art, costume reference, prop styling or framed print use.

Condition

Poor to fair antique condition. The book has heavy age-related wear, staining, foxing, water marks, fading, rubbing, fraying, cloth loss and splitting to the spine and corners. The front board and binding are weak, with visible separation at the hinge and exposed webbing. Endpapers are heavily stained and worn. Pages show foxing, tanning, handling marks, creasing, water staining and some tears. Several colour plates remain attractive and display well, but this should be bought as a heavily worn antique book rather than a fine copy.
