A poignant First World War commemorative embroidered panel worked on blue silk, inscribed IN MEMORY OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN CONFLICT A.D. 1914. The central composition features crossed Allied flags, including the Union Flag, French tricolour and Belgian colours, arranged around a circular life ring motif. At the centre of the life ring is a rectangular aperture designed as a setting for a photograph, intended to hold a portrait of a serviceman or commemorated individual.
Above the central device is a crowned emblem, with a laurel spray below, all executed in silk threads and applied silk elements. Panels of this type were produced as memorial or remembrance textiles during or shortly after the First World War, often personalised with a photograph once mounted or framed. The reverse clearly shows the hand-worked construction, confirming period manufacture and authenticity.
A rare and emotionally resonant survivor, combining military symbolism with personal remembrance, and offering strong visual impact when conserved or framed.
Size/Dimensions
H: 46.5 cm x L: 53 cm
Condition
Fragile condition consistent with age and silk construction. There is weakness and splitting to the silk ground running across the horizontal middle, along with overall thinning, creasing and wear to the silk surface. Despite its fragility, the panel remains visually striking and is best suited to careful handling, conservation mounting or framed display behind glass.
Era
First World War period, circa 1914–1918
