An original early 20th century enamel advertising sign for Gargoyle Mobiloil, featuring the iconic red Gargoyle device above bold black “Mobiloil” lettering on a white ground. The lower text reads “Vacuum Oil Company Ltd,” identifying the sign as a genuine British issue by Vacuum Oil Company Ltd, the predecessor to Mobil. This design is one of the most recognisable and enduring images in early motoring advertising, intended for display in garages, filling stations and workshops. The sign shows period wear, with enamel losses, rusting and edge degradation that strongly evidence long-term working use. Despite the losses, the Gargoyle emblem and Mobiloil branding remain clear and highly decorative, giving the sign strong visual presence and authenticity.
Size/Dimensions
H: 48 cm x L: 60 cm
Condition
Original unrestored condition. The sign displays surface wear, enamel loss, rusting through to the steel in several areas, edge corrosion and wear around fixing holes. The reverse shows oxidisation consistent with age and outdoor or workshop display. The remaining enamel is stable. All wear is entirely commensurate with age and forms a key part of the sign’s character and appeal.
