An authentic 19th century Grodnertal wooden doll, featuring the distinctive painted “tuck comb” hairstyle for which these dolls are best known. Made in the Grodnertal region of Germany, these dolls were carved and painted by hand, with jointed shoulders and hips that allow them to sit and pose.
This example has a finely hand-painted face with grey-blue eyes, red lips, and soft rosy cheeks. The painted hair is swept back, topped with a yellow and red tuck comb. The torso and upper limbs are painted a deep brown, while the lower arms and legs are painted in pale tones, with black painted shoes. The carving has the simple yet elegant charm that makes Grodnertal dolls so appealing to collectors.
These dolls were popular export toys during the 19th century and today are highly sought after as examples of early European toy-making and folk art. Each one was individually made, so no two are alike.
