A rare survivor from the early 19th century, this Grodnertal wooden doll captures the charm and individuality of early European folk toys. Hand-carved with jointed limbs and painted features, she is an early example with moulded and painted black hair — a distinctive feature that sets her apart from later versions with simpler finishes. Her delicately painted face shows age-related wear that only adds to her authenticity.
The doll wears layers of hand-sewn clothing, including undergarments and a striped gown. While it is uncertain if the outfit is entirely original, it has been with the doll for a long time and displays the age, materials, and workmanship consistent with period garments.
This example shows the wear of time with losses to some limbs, flaking paint, and age patina, but she remains stable and displays beautifully — a fine collector’s piece with true character.
