A charming vintage papier-mâché clown sweet container, marked Made in Scotland to the underside.
The clown has a removable head, allowing the hollow body to be used as a container for sweets or small treats. Novelty containers of this type were popular as festive, carnival and circus-themed pieces, often made from moulded paper pulp or composition with hand-painted detail.
This example has a wonderfully characterful folk-art look, with a smiling painted face, red hair, pointed hat, ruffled collar, black buttons and black shoes. The textured surface, worn paint and aged patina give it a slightly whimsical, theatrical quality typical of early-to-mid 20th century novelty and fairground pieces.
Most papier-mâché sweet containers were produced in Continental Europe or Japan, so a piece marked Made in Scotland is a particularly interesting British regional example. It would appeal to collectors of vintage sweet containers, circus and fairground items, folk-art figures, festive novelties and unusual decorative objects.
