Antique Milward’s English Needles Wooden Display Box with Glass Lid
A rare and highly decorative antique wooden shop display box made for Milward’s English Needles, with a sloping glazed lid and fitted internal compartments. The glass top is lettered “MILWARD’S” and “ENGLISH NEEDLES” in original gilt lettering, allowing the contents to be viewed when closed. The interior is divided into multiple angled compartments designed to hold packets of needles, with an additional drawer to the base fitted with a brass pull.
The front panel is stamped “To be used for Milward’s Needles – Property of The Spool Cotton Co.”, confirming its use as a trade display piece supplied to retailers rather than a domestic sewing box. Examples of this type were used on haberdashery counters and are now increasingly scarce, particularly with intact glass, legible lettering and drawer present. The drawer appears to be a later replacement. The overall form is robust and visually strong, making it ideal for collectors, interiors, or retail display.
