Antique Wooden Milliner’s Hat Block – Dome Form – Early 20th Century
A handsome antique wooden hat block, once used by milliners and hatmakers to shape felt or straw hats. This example features a rounded domed crown mounted on a sturdy block base, both turned from solid wood. The base is stamped “2 1/2” and “W 1”, likely denoting size and workshop reference.
These blocks were essential tools in traditional hat-making workshops, where steam and hand-craftsmanship shaped fashionable headwear. Today, they are highly collectible as decorative objects, sculptural pieces, or for continued use by milliners.
The surface has developed a rich, smooth patina from decades of handling and use, with age-related wear and old woodworm traces that add to its character.
