A wonderful antique wooden pigeon decoy, hand carved and painted with beautifully timeworn surface detail. The bird has a long tapered body and tail, painted wing markings, grey head, glass eye and a small carved beak. The paint has worn naturally over time, revealing the wood beneath and giving it a very strong decorative folk art look.

This type of bird decoy was traditionally used to attract pigeons or doves, but today these pieces are highly collectable as country house, folk art, sporting and interior display items. This example has a particularly good shape, with a long elegant profile and plenty of aged character.

A lovely piece for a country interior, folk art collection, shooting / sporting display, cabinet of curiosities, or rustic decorative scheme.

Condition

Antique used condition with heavy surface wear, paint loss, knocks, scratches, age splits, old marks and general wear throughout. There is a hole to the underside/body, likely from previous mounting or use. The paint is worn and distressed, which is part of its appeal.

Likely early to mid 20th century, possibly c.1920s–1950s.
