Late 19th century mahogany artist’s drawing box with hinged lid and fitted interior compartments, showing strong, authentic signs of long-term studio use. This is a flat-topped working box rather than a writing slope, retaining its original internal divisions for pens, nibs and tools. The interior displays heavy ink staining, wear and darkened surfaces that give it immediate visual credibility as a genuine Victorian artist or draughtsman’s working object.
The box contains period dip pens, interchangeable metal nibs and a box of William Mitchell “Pedigree” round hand pens, Birmingham & London, included as found. These tools are characteristic of technical drawing, illustration, drafting and calligraphic work rather than casual correspondence. The mix of worn wooden pen holders and metal nibs adds strong visual texture and narrative value.
Externally, the box has a simple, unpretentious form with inset brass cartouche to the lid and original lock escutcheon (key absent). This is an atmospheric, honest piece — ideal for film, television and theatre set dressing, artist studios, period interiors or collectors seeking objects with real use-wear and presence.
