A scarce surviving roll of PACSAN toilet paper in its original printed wrapper, featuring distinctive medical-themed advertising and typography. The design shows a doctor examining a microscope with the wording “Recognised by the Medical Profession,” reinforcing the hygienic and sanitary marketing commonly used for early toilet papers.
The wrapper includes an interesting acronym explanation for the brand name: Pure, Antiseptic, Clarified, Sanitary, Absorbent, Natural. This style of branding reflects mid-20th century marketing where household hygiene products were promoted with quasi-medical authority to reassure consumers.
The roll itself is considerably larger than many earlier toilet rolls, suggesting a later development in domestic toilet paper production when manufacturers began producing longer rolls with more sheets. The packaging also states “Made in England” and “Emergency Quality,” which may indicate wartime or austerity-era production when paper quality and supply were restricted.
Items like this were designed to be used and discarded, making intact examples particularly difficult to find today. It makes a strong display piece for collectors of vintage packaging, pharmacy and medical advertising, social history, or film and television prop departments.
