A vintage Mirro household cleanser container with the distinctive “Can’t Scratch!” advertising label. This example is the wartime version described on the label as a “Special Wartime Canister,” produced during the Second World War when metal was in short supply.
Unlike earlier Mirro tins made entirely from tinplate, this container has a ribbed fibreboard body with metal ends. During the war, British manufacturers reduced their use of metal because it was required for military production, and many household products were packaged in fibreboard tubes such as this one.
The bold green and yellow label promotes Mirro as a “Never-Scratch” cleanser suitable for aluminium, enamel, glass, marble, cookers, sinks, tiles and washing machines. The base instructs the user to pierce holes in the lid to dispense the powder, another practical wartime economy feature that avoided the need for a metal shaker top.
Manufactured by Thomas Hedley & Co. Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne, this is an appealing piece of British wartime domestic packaging with strong period graphics. It displays well and would suit collectors of vintage advertising, kitchenalia, packaging, social history or film and television prop departments.
