Antique Victorian Shell Pincushion with Red Velvet & Green Ribbon

A decorative late Victorian pincushion made from two natural shell halves enclosing a richly coloured red velvet cushion.

The two shells curve around the padded centre, creating an attractive rounded form, while a surviving green silk ribbon is tied around one end. The contrast between the pale textured shells, deep red velvet and green ribbon gives the piece a particularly striking appearance.

A single old blue-headed pin remains in the cushion.

Shell pincushions were popular during the later 19th century as practical sewing accessories and decorative keepsakes, often associated with seaside souvenirs and Victorian shellwork.
