An attractive late 19th-century ceramic weighing plate made for W. & T. Avery of Birmingham, one of Britain’s best-known manufacturers of weighing equipment.

The circular white ceramic plate is transfer printed in dark green with the name “W. & T. Avery – Birmingham” displayed across flowing ribbon banners. A decorative geometric and floral border surrounds the plate, giving it a particularly appealing Victorian appearance.

These ceramic plates were fitted to shopkeeper’s and grocer’s balance scales and provided the weighing surface for goods sold by weight. Today they make excellent decorative pieces in their own right and are especially collectable among enthusiasts of antique shop fittings, weighing scales and Victorian kitchenalia.

The clear Avery branding and strong transfer decoration make this a very recognisable example of late Victorian retail equipment.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its original use. There are light surface marks, small firing imperfections and areas of discolouration to the white glaze. There is some wear around the rim, including a small area of glaze loss visible in the photographs. The green transfer remains strong, clear and well defined.
