Late Victorian White Ironstone Curry Rice Storage Jar with Lid

A decorative late Victorian to Edwardian white ironstone kitchen storage jar labelled “CURRY RICE” in bold black lettering to the front. This is a lovely example of the graphic black-lettered pantry jar type, with a simple cylindrical form, incised banding to the body and a matching ceramic lid.

The jar has a beautifully aged white glaze with crazing, surface wear and period discolouration throughout. The bold lettering has a strong graphic look and displays very well, making it an appealing piece for a country kitchen, pantry, dresser, shop display or antique kitchenalia collection.

The base has a partly worn printed maker’s mark, including “Made in England”. The style, form and lettering are typical of late Victorian to Edwardian pantry storage jars, dating to around c.1890–1910.

A very decorative and increasingly sought-after piece of antique kitchenalia, especially with the more unusual “Curry Rice” label.

Condition

Antique used condition with age-related crazing, staining, surface marks, rim wear and discolouration throughout. The black lettering is worn in places but remains clear and decorative. The lid has crazing, staining, knocks and small chips/nibbles around the rim. There is general wear around the jar rim and base, as shown. Decorative use/display only.
