An original mid-century Dewhurst’s Sylko rotating shop counter thread display carousel, designed for use in drapery and haberdashery shops to present the Sylko sewing thread range.
The cylindrical display features curved clear panels revealing rows of colourful Sylko reels, with classic branding including “Choose from 350 colours” along the black top rails and “Sew it with ‘Sylko’” across the interior panel. One end carries the striking Dewhurst’s Sylko circular advertising graphic with “Three Shells Machine 40 Twist”, a well-known Sylko brand mark used on mid-20th century thread.
The carousel rotates smoothly using the side knob, allowing shop assistants to turn the unit to access different colours. Displays such as this were a familiar sight on the counters of sewing and drapery shops and were designed to make colour selection quick and visually appealing for customers.
The carousel remains filled with Sylko thread reels, creating a wonderful spectrum of colour and giving the display strong visual impact. The reels are plastic Sylko reels and include approximately 340 different colours across the display. Many of the reels appear unused and remain in their original wrappers, while others are partially used and have been neatly wrapped to protect the thread. Together they recreate the vibrant appearance of an original haberdashery shop display.
Original Sylko rotating counter displays are increasingly scarce today and are highly sought after by collectors of sewing memorabilia, haberdashery advertising, interior stylists, and film or television prop departments looking for authentic period shop fittings. It makes a striking decorative piece for a sewing room, studio, vintage shop interior, or haberdashery display.
