This elegant early Victorian sewing box, dated 1839, is crafted in rich rosewood with pewter stringing and delicate mother-of-pearl inlay. Made in sarcophagus form and raised on turned bun feet, it features side handles and beautiful detailing throughout. A cartouche on the lid is engraved E.S. and dated 1839, with decorative quarter bobbin mouldings framing the top.
The interior features a lift-out tray and lid lining in original yellow silk and patterned paper, edged in pewter. The tray holds an exceptional set of original mother-of-pearl sewing tools and accessories.
Contents include five mother-of-pearl reels, three mother-of pearl sewing tools, mother-of-pearl tape measure, waxer and shuttle, thimble and thimble guard. It also comes with original letters and envelopes recording the gift of the workbox to Miss Shepard from her scholars – a touching piece of social history.

Condition
The original key is included, although the lock is not currently functional. There are splits in the wood at the base and along the back edge, and there is minor loss to the mother-of-pearl inlay at the front. The silk lining has deteriorated over time and is now protected by a clear plastic cover. Overall, the piece shows wear and patina consistent with age, use, and careful handling.
