A beautifully coloured early 19th-century apple-shaped pin cushion, handmade from velvet in warm golden ochre with rich russet-red shading.

The rounded fruit has a pleasingly naturalistic form, with hand-sewn seams and gathered detailing around the top and base. A short remnant of the original stalk remains at the top. The shaded velvet gives the appearance of a ripening apple, with the colouring changing from yellow and ochre through to deep red.

This piece came from an auction where it was catalogued as dating from the 1830s. Its strong sculptural shape and wonderfully mellow colouring make it a charming example of early sewing-room haberdashery and decorative textile fruit.

A rare collector’s piece for a display of antique pin cushions, sewing notions, early textiles or folk art.

Condition

The apple remains firm, well filled and attractively shaped, with no obvious holes. The velvet shows gentle rubbing, surface variation, fading and minor marks consistent with age. The hand-sewn seams and gathered construction remain visible.

Only a short remnant of the original stalk survives at the top, with some age-related wear around this area. Dark thread or fabric is visible at the gathered base. Overall, the textile body remains in good condition for a piece dating from the 1830s.
