A wonderfully characterful early 19th-century orange-shaped pin cushion, handmade from warm orange velvet and retaining part of its original coated fabric detail at the top.

The fruit has been carefully formed from hand-sewn velvet panels, with gathered detailing at both ends. Its rounded shape, rich colouring and subtle darker markings give it a particularly naturalistic appearance, resembling the mottled skin of a real orange.

This piece was acquired from an auction where it was catalogued as dating from the 1830s. Its firm sculptural form and surviving decorative detail make it a charming and increasingly difficult-to-find example of early sewing-room haberdashery.

A lovely collector’s piece for a display of antique pin cushions, textile fruit, sewing notions or early folk art.

Condition

The orange remains firm, well filled and attractively shaped. The velvet is intact, with no obvious holes, and retains a good depth of colour. There is gentle rubbing, surface variation, scattered darker marks and some wear along the hand-sewn seams, all consistent with age and use.

Part of the original coated fabric detail survives at one end. Dark colouration is visible within the gathered construction at the opposite end. Overall, the textile body remains in good condition for a piece dating from the 1830s. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
