A charming early 19th-century strawberry-shaped pin cushion, handmade from softly faded red velvet and finished with pale fabric leaves and a short fabric-covered stalk.

The strawberry has been carefully formed to create a wonderfully naturalistic fruit shape, with dark hand-applied markings representing the seeds. The pale fabric leaves are arranged around the top and remain attached, together with the original short stalk.

This piece was acquired from an auction where it was catalogued as dating from the 1830s. Its unusual form, mellow colouring and surviving fabric details make it a particularly appealing example of early sewing-room haberdashery.

A lovely collector’s piece for a display of antique pin cushions, textile fruit, sewing notions or early folk art.

Condition

The strawberry remains firm, well filled and attractively shaped, with no obvious holes to the velvet body. The fabric has faded from its original red to a soft muted pink and shows gentle rubbing and surface variation consistent with age.

The dark seed markings remain visible across the fruit. The pale fabric leaves and stalk show age-related wear and discolouration. The hand-sewn construction remains visible around the edges. Overall, the textile body remains in good condition for a piece dating from the 1830s.
