RESERVED: 1930s J. & P. Coats Sewing & Mending Companion Boxed Sewing Kit

A wonderful original J & P Coats Sewing & Mending Companion, dating from the late 1930s and retaining an unusually good selection of its original sewing contents. The compact red-covered box has a black diagonal band to the lid, lettered in gilt: “J. & P. Coats Sewing & Mending Companion”.

Inside is a fitted cream insert containing a colourful selection of J. & P. Coats silk and mending threads, including twelve small wooden reels of silk thread and a further group of neutral-toned sewing and mending threads. The wooden reels are impressed “J. & P. Coats – Boilfast – 10 Yds” to the ends.

The central section retains the original printed J. & P. Coats Silks – Sewing & Mending panel together with a metal thimble. A packet of Milward’s Helix Sharps needles, sizes 5 to 10, is retained beneath the clips inside the lid.

These small sewing companions were intended as practical household sewing kits, bringing together silk thread, mending yarns, needles and a thimble in one fitted box.

A particularly attractive piece of pre-war haberdashery, especially appealing for the combination of original fitted box, colourful silk reels and surviving sewing accessories.
