A wonderfully unusual antique novelty tape measure modelled as a ripe pear and seated within a fitted, polished coquilla nut base.
The pear is believed to be made from moulded celluloid and is painted in soft cream, blush pink and warm yellow tones, with a moulded green leaf and long stalk. A small applied fly decorates the front and cleverly conceals the opening for the original woven measuring tape, which is marked in inches.
The pear lifts from the coquilla nut holder and can be displayed either assembled or separately. The natural grain and warm colouring of the polished nut base contrast beautifully with the glossy painted fruit.
Dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, this is a highly decorative and imaginative sewing collectible. Novelty tape measures were produced in many unusual forms, but the pear design, applied fly and surviving fitted base make this a particularly appealing example.
Size/Dimensions
Overall height: 7 cm (approximately)
Pear: H: 4.5 cm x D 3.5 cm
Coquilla nut base: H: 2.5 xm x D: 4.5 cm
Condition
In good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The pear remains hard, firm and intact, with no visible cracks. The lines running around the body are moulded construction seams rather than damage.
There is light surface wear, minor marking and some rubbing to the painted decoration. The applied fly remains attached, with a little wear around it. The original woven measuring tape is present and pulls from the pear, showing age-related discolouration and slight fraying near the exposed end.
The green leaf and stalk remain in place with some surface wear. The coquilla nut base has natural variation, light scratches and general wear consistent with age. The tape mechanism should be handled gently.
