Antique Clark’s Anchor Cantilever Embroidery Thread Box with Original Contents

A substantial antique wooden cantilever embroidery box made specifically for Clark’s Anchor stranded cotton embroidery thread. The drawer fronts are stamped “Stranded Cotton for Embroidery”, and the top drawer shows a ghosted Clark’s Anchor mark, where the original branding has rubbed with age but remains visible as a shadow imprint. The box opens on its original metal cantilever arms to reveal multiple divided trays designed to hold skeins of Anchor embroidery cotton. The listing includes all thread shown, with a generous quantity of period Clark’s Anchor stranded cottons in a wide and attractive range of colours, creating an impressive and authentic interior display.

Finished in dark-stained wood with a solid hinged lid, this is a classic late Victorian to Edwardian sewing accessory. While some components have been sympathetically replaced, the overall form, purpose and presentation remain true to its original function. It is suitable for careful use, display, or as a highly decorative interior or prop piece.

Condition

Good antique condition overall. The wooden box shows surface wear, marks and patina consistent with age and long use. The Clark’s Anchor branding to the top drawer has worn to a visible ghost print. The drawer knobs are later replacements, as are the internal wooden dividers, replaced at some point to maintain usability. The cantilever mechanism works and opens correctly; when closing, the right-hand support leg needs to be guided back into position, which is typical of age-related tolerance in these mechanisms. All Clark’s Anchor embroidery threads are included as found and show age-related wear but present well. No cracks or major structural damage observed.
