A wonderfully characterful antique white ironstone hot water jug, dating from the early 20th century and retaining its original wicker-wrapped swing handle.

The tall tapered body is decorated with simple vertical moulded ribs and boldly marked HOT WATER in black lettering across the front. It has an integral pouring spout, a removable domed ceramic lid and ceramic side mounts supporting the woven wicker handle.

These practical hot water jugs were used in domestic settings, hotels and guest rooms for carrying and serving hot water before hot running water became commonplace. The simple white body and strong black lettering give this example particularly good decorative appeal. The original wicker handle is a lovely feature, with a warm aged colour contrasting beautifully against the white glazed ceramic.

A very attractive piece of antique kitchenalia or bathroom ware and an excellent addition to a collection of white ironstone, hotel ware or early household ceramics.

Condition

Good antique condition with expected signs of age and previous use. There are some small marks, light staining and surface wear to the white glaze, particularly around the rim, lid and base.

There is a chip to the underside edge of the base. This is largely concealed when the jug is standing and does not significantly affect its appearance from the front, but it is shown in the photographs for completeness. The wicker handle shows natural age-related wear and variation in colour but remains an attractive feature. The lid is present and fits well.
