A charming antique child’s sewing machine, made in Germany and dating from approximately the 1920s or 1930s.

Constructed from black-painted metal, the machine is decorated on both sides and across its shaped base with colourful red, green and gold floral transfers. It has a large three-spoke handwheel with its original wooden handle, together with a spool pin, needle, presser foot, needle plate and visible lower mechanism.

Although produced for children, these miniature machines were designed to imitate full-sized domestic sewing machines and could make a simple chain stitch. Today, they are particularly attractive display pieces for a sewing room, haberdashery collection or vintage interior. Marked “Made in Germany” to the front.

Condition

In attractive antique condition with expected signs of age and use. There is paint loss, rubbing, surface scratching and oxidation, particularly around the feet, base edges, handwheel and exposed metal components. The floral decoration remains colourful and displays well, although it is softer and more worn in places.

The needle, presser foot, spool pin, needle plate and visible mechanisms appear to be present. The machine has not been tested with thread or fabric and is therefore sold as an untested decorative collector’s item. No guarantee is made that it will sew without adjustment or attention.
