An antique ceramic pie funnel by Grimwade, known as “The Improved Pie Funnel”, dating from the early 20th century.
Made in cream glazed ceramic, the funnel has a four-footed base and tall central chimney designed to allow steam to escape through the pastry during baking. Around the body is the original black printed advertising and instructional text headed “THE IMPROVED”, explaining how the funnel carries away steam and helps produce a light, flaky pie crust.
These printed Grimwade examples are much more decorative and collectable than the plain utilitarian pie funnels more commonly encountered and make excellent pieces of antique kitchenalia.
