An exceptional antique white ironstone dairy slab, boldly printed “PURE BUTTER” in black Gothic lettering around the rim. Made by the Dairy Supply Company Ltd, Museum Street, Bloomsbury, London, this is one of the most sought-after designs of its kind. These slabs were originally used in grocers and dairies to display blocks of butter and are now among the most collectible pieces of English advertising pottery.
This early 20th-century example has superb visual presence. The black transfer lettering is crisp and even, with strong contrast against the clean white glaze. It has the rich patina and gentle signs of use that distinguish genuine period examples — subtle surface wear, fine age-related crazing, and light staining that give it authentic character without compromising display appeal. The base bears the printed maker’s mark, “Dairy Supply Company Ltd, Museum St. Bloomsbury, W.C.”

Condition
This slab is in excellent antique condition for its age. The lettering is clear and unfaded, and the glaze retains an attractive sheen. There is all-over fine crazing and a few light surface marks consistent with age and use, but no cracks, chips, or restoration. The underside shows expected wear from use in a working dairy environment. Overall, it presents beautifully — a genuine and well-preserved example of an increasingly scarce piece.
