A large antique ceramic marmalade jar made by Maling of Newcastle for James Keiller & Sons of Dundee, believed to be the 2lb size. The cream-glazed cylindrical pot has the classic black transfer-printed Keiller design to the front, reading:

“Grand Medal of Merit Vienna 1873
James Keiller & Sons
Dundee Marmalade
Only Prize Medal for Marmalade
London, 1862”

The underside is impressed Maling Newcastle, identifying the maker.

James Keiller & Sons became famous for Dundee marmalade, and these substantial ceramic jars were used as commercial packaging before glass jars became commonplace. Today, the larger sizes are particularly decorative pieces of antique kitchenalia and work well alongside breadboards, advertising wares and other early domestic ceramics.

This example measures approximately 14 cm high x 11.75 cm diameter and is believed to correspond to the 2lb jar size.

Condition

Good antique condition overall. There is extensive age-related crazing to the glaze, along with some light staining, discolouration and surface marks consistent with age and use. There is a small manufacturing imperfection to the inner rim. From the photographs, no significant cracks or major chips are apparent.
