A charming antique wooden knitting and needlework basket, painted in black with beautifully time-worn hand-painted floral decoration.

The basket has a substantial architectural carrying handle rising above the centre, with shaped supports and a gently arched hand grip. The exterior is decorated with colourful flowers and foliage in muted reds, ochres and greens, while the end panels are particularly delightful, each painted with balls of wool and trailing yarn — a wonderful indication of the basket's original purpose.

The upper panels are similarly decorated with hand-painted flowers, framed by moulded wooden edges. The interior retains a warm reddish-brown finish, creating a lovely contrast with the dark exterior. The black painted surface has naturally worn through in places to reveal the warm wood beneath, giving the piece an especially attractive, untouched appearance.

A beautiful and very usable survivor, ideal for storing knitting, sewing materials, textiles or haberdashery, as well as being a highly decorative piece in its own right.

Size/Dimensions

H: 38 cm x L: 39 cm x W: 21.5 cm
Condition

In good antique condition with considerable age-related character. There is rubbing and wear to the black painted finish, particularly along the edges, corners and handle, together with scratches, small knocks and areas of paint loss. The hand-painted decoration has softened and faded with age but remains clearly visible and very attractive.

There is more pronounced wear to some corners and joints, as shown in the photographs. The handle and its fittings also show expected age and wear. We have left the surface as found rather than attempting to restore or over-clean it.

Era

Late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920
