Antique Pair of Staffordshire Nursery Plates c.1840-60

A pair of charming miniature nursery plates, probably made in the Staffordshire potteries during the mid-19th century.

The first plate plate's centre is decorated in black transfer print with a delightful pastoral scene of two children feeding a hen and her chicks in a garden. Flowers fill the foreground, while trees and a large house can be seen beyond. A delicate trailing floral border surrounds the scene, finished with a fine looped edge and gently scalloped rim.

The second plate is a companion plate from the same miniature nursery service, with the identical scalloped shape and floral border. The central black transfer shows a playful garden scene of a boy pushing a girl in a wheelbarrow, accompanied by a small dog.

The reverse on both is unmarked, so the precise maker cannot be confirmed.
