An appealing early 19th-century child’s pearlware mug decorated with a black transfer-printed image of a stag or buck.

The animal is shown standing within a rural landscape of distant mountains, water and trees, with the title “BUCK” printed beneath. The finely engraved image was both decorative and educational, helping children to identify the animal depicted.

Small pictorial mugs of this type were commonly given to children as presents or rewards. This attractive example would complement a collection of early children’s pottery, animal-themed transferware or Georgian ceramics.

The mug has a cylindrical body, moulded foot and simple loop handle. The underside is unmarked and retains an old collector’s label.

Condition

In good antique condition for its age, with overall crazing, light staining, surface marks and wear around the rim. There are small nibbles and glaze losses around the rim and foot, together with minor firing and transfer-printing imperfections. There appears to be a short fine line beside the upper handle terminal, possibly a firing line or old hairline. The handle remains firmly attached. Please study the photographs carefully.
