A wonderfully characterful antique pottery butter crock, dating from around the late Victorian or Edwardian period.

The cream-glazed crock is moulded with a subtle basketweave texture and finished with the word “Butter” in flowing black script. Its original fitted lid has a simple integral handle and a small central ventilation hole.

This is a substantial piece of early kitchen storage pottery, with the extensive crazing, discolouration and wear that give genuine antique kitchenalia its distinctive timeworn appearance. The crock is unmarked, so its maker and precise place of manufacture are unknown. Its materials, construction and decoration suggest a date of approximately 1890–1920.

A lovely display piece for a country kitchen, pantry or collection of antique dairy and kitchenalia.

Condition

There is extensive age-related crazing and discolouration throughout, together with scattered dark marks, surface wear, firing imperfections and several small areas of glaze loss. There is wear around the locating rim on the underside of the lid. No major cracks or repairs have been identified. Due to its age, condition and unknown glaze composition, we recommend this piece for decorative use rather than direct food storage.
