A wonderfully characterful antique Shenfield Hall dairy pail, with the name faintly stamped to the front. Shenfield Hall is a historic Grade II listed house in Shenfield, Essex, with medieval origins and later 16th, 18th and 19th century alterations. The named marking gives this piece lovely country house interest and a clear sense of place.
The pail has a dark japanned or painted tin body with brass handle and fittings, including a triangular pouring spout and hinged oval lid. Pails of this type were practical dairy vessels, used for collecting, carrying and pouring milk between the dairy, kitchen and outbuildings. The lid helped protect the contents, while the brass handle and spout made it easy to carry and pour.
A lovely decorative piece with strong country house, dairy, kitchenalia and pantry display appeal. It would also be ideal as a period prop or for dried flower display.
