Antique Singer Model 20 Child’s Sewing Machine with Original Clamp c.1930

A wonderful antique Singer Model 20 miniature sewing machine, complete with its original table clamp.

Introduced by Singer as a small working sewing machine for children, the Model 20 is one of the most recognisable and collectible early toy sewing machines. Despite its diminutive proportions, it was designed as a functioning hand-cranked machine producing a simple chain stitch.

This example has the classic black enamelled cast-metal body with gilt SINGER lettering and Singer Manufacturing Co. trademark, together with a nickel-plated needle plate, fittings and handwheel rim. Of particular interest are the numbered threading points marked 1–4 across the upper mechanism, a feature introduced during the later development of the Model 20. These, together with the style of the machine, place this example broadly in the late 1920s to 1930s.

The openwork handwheel retains its black enamelled finish and decorative metal details, while the base still has its green felt edging. Also included is the substantial original Singer-style table clamp, allowing the machine to be secured to a work surface as originally intended.

A very appealing example for a collection of antique sewing machines, Singer memorabilia or vintage haberdashery, and an especially attractive display piece.
