A wonderfully decorative antique ceramic cheese dish made by Wilkinson Ltd of Staffordshire for St Ivel Cheese, dating from the early 20th century.

The rectangular cover is boldly decorated in cobalt blue with the distinctive “St Ivel Cheese” advertising lettering, giving the piece particularly strong period kitchenalia appeal. It sits on its original shaped rectangular serving platter, with both pieces finished in a simple white glaze. The cover has softly waved edges and an integral moulded handle, while the base has an attractive shaped rim. The underside of the platter carries the green printed Royal Staffordshire Pottery – Wilkinson Ltd – England backstamp.

St Ivel was introduced by the Somerset dairy firm Aplin & Barrett in the early 20th century, and these purpose-made advertising dishes were produced for serving and promoting the company’s cheese.

A lovely surviving piece of early branded kitchenalia and a particularly attractive addition to a collection of antique advertising, white ironstone or dairy-related wares.

Condition

Good antique condition with expected signs of age and previous use. There is general crazing to the glaze, together with some age-related staining and discolouration, particularly around the edges of the platter and lower edge of the cover. There are also occasional small surface marks and firing imperfections consistent with an early utilitarian ceramic piece.

The cobalt-blue St Ivel advertising remains strong and clear and the cover and original matching platter display very well together.
