Antique Staffordshire Child’s Plate Girl Picking Grapes c.1840

A charming antique child’s plate, probably made in the Staffordshire potteries during the early to mid-19th century.

The centre is decorated in black transfer print with a young girl gathering grapes from a trailing vine, carrying a small basket over her arm. An urn, flowers and foliage complete the pastoral garden scene.

The wide border is particularly attractive, featuring exotic birds or pheasants among flowers, leafy branches and scrolling ornament, all enclosed by a delicate circular border. The plate has a gently scalloped rim and the slightly uneven character associated with early pottery production.

The reverse is unmarked, so the precise manufacturer cannot be confirmed.
