Antique Staffordshire Staple-Repaired Nursery Plate Rural Boy c.1830

A characterful antique child’s nursery plate, probably made in the Staffordshire potteries during the early 19th century.

The centre is decorated in black transfer print with a young country boy seated beside a rustic wooden fence or bridge, holding a long staff or fishing rod. Trees and open fields surround him, with a church visible in the distance. The wide moulded border is decorated with raised ears of wheat or grain, giving the plate an attractive agricultural theme.

Most notably, the plate retains numerous historic metal staple repairs. Before modern ceramic adhesives became widely available, cracked pottery was repaired by drilling small holes on either side of the break and inserting metal staples. This labour-intensive repair suggests that the plate was once valued enough to preserve despite its damage. The reverse is unmarked, so the precise manufacturer cannot be confirmed.

A fascinating piece of social history with strong make-do-and-mend appeal, ideal for display within a collection of early nursery ware, transferware or historically repaired ceramics.
