Antique Stephens Ink Enamel Advertising Thermometer Sign

A superb antique Stephens’ Ink enamel advertising thermometer sign, with bold black lettering on a white enamel ground. The front reads “Stephens’ Ink — For All Temperatures” and retains its original glass thermometer tube with Fahrenheit scale from 0 to 140.

The scale includes wonderful period wording including “Blood Heat”, “Summer Heat”, “Temperate”, “Freezing” and “Zero”. The back carries the original instructions stating that the thermometer was for “Outside Exhibit Only” and refers to H. C. Stephens, Aldersgate Street, London, E.C.

The lower front is marked for J. A. Jordan & Sons, Bilston, a well-known manufacturer of enamel advertising signs. This is a strong and highly decorative piece of British advertising, ideal for collectors of enamel signs, chemist / stationer advertising, shop display pieces, or country house interiors.
