A charming small antique dairy pail or cream can, engraved to the body: 126 Lyham Road, Brixton. The lid is also engraved Sussex Fair Dairy, and the brass fitting is marked Hanamada Registered. This is a lovely piece of London dairy history.
Pails of this type were used for storing, carrying and pouring milk or cream, often by dairies delivering to local households. Smaller lidded examples like this may have been used for cream, household milk supply, or measured dairy delivery. The fitted lid helped protect the contents, while the brass handle and pouring spout made it practical for carrying and controlled pouring.
The pail has a dark japanned or tinned metal body, brass swing handle, brass pouring spout and hinged oval lid. A very decorative piece of antique kitchenalia, ideal for a dairy collection, pantry display, country kitchen setting or period prop.
