A charming early 20th-century glass cooking measure, produced for Tit-Bits and featuring the wonderfully named 'Do-Well' design, with extensive blue printed measurements for a variety of everyday cooking and baking ingredients.
Dating from the 1920s or shortly afterwards, this attractive glass measure has a tapered form, substantial base and shaped pouring lip. The sides are decorated with beautifully detailed blue lettering, providing measurements for ingredients including flour, sugar, rice, raisins, sultanas, tapioca, chopped suet and ground almonds. Alongside the ingredient measurements are traditional British liquid measures, including pints, gills, ounces and tablespoons, making this an ingenious piece of domestic kitchen equipment from a time before modern electronic kitchen scales.
The base retains its original blue printed registration details, reading 'TIT-BITS – DO-WELL COOKING MEASURE', together with registered design number 685757, dating the original design to 1921.
A wonderful example of nostalgic British kitchenalia, with particularly attractive typography and considerable decorative appeal. Lovely displayed on an open kitchen shelf alongside antique baking equipment and traditional kitchen utensils.
