Antique Victorian Albert Tartan Ware Needle Case

A charming Victorian Scottish Tartan Ware needle case decorated in the colourful Albert tartan.

Made from turned wood, the slender cylindrical case has a rounded, almost bullet-shaped end and is covered with finely printed tartan decoration beneath a glossy varnished finish. The removable cap is titled “Albert” in gilt lettering.

The case separates to reveal the original plain wooden inner tube, designed for the storage and protection of sewing needles. The rich red and green tartan remains particularly attractive and the gilt title is still clearly legible.

A lovely example of 19th-century Scottish sewing ware and an appealing addition to a collection of antique haberdashery, treen or Tartan Ware.

Size/Dimensions

H: 9 cm x D: 1.1 cm

Condition

In good antique condition with general surface wear consistent with age and use. There are small areas of rubbing and marking to the tartan decoration and varnish, particularly around the joint, together with normal age-related wear to the exposed wooden inner tube. The two sections fit together correctly and the gilt “Albert” lettering remains clear.

Era

Victorian, circa 1860–1890
