Antique Victorian Cockle Shell Velvet Pincushion
A charming antique sewing pincushion made from two natural cockle shells enclosing a richly coloured plum-purple velvet cushion. The shells have been positioned around the padded centre to form a small decorative sewing accessory, with the deep jewel-toned velvet providing a lovely contrast against the softly aged cream shells. Several old pins remain in the cushion, adding to its wonderfully untouched appearance.
Small shell pincushions were popular during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, combining practical sewing accessories with the Victorian taste for natural materials and seaside keepsakes.
A lovely little survivor and an appealing addition to a collection of antique sewing notions or shellwork.
