Antique Victorian Treen Saucepan Pin Cushion – Ebonised Wood c.1880

A charming small antique sewing accessory in the form of a miniature saucepan, made from turned and ebonised wood with a domed fabric pin cushion set into the top.

The rounded black-painted wooden body has a short turned side handle, giving the piece its distinctive miniature vessel shape. The pin cushion is covered in a warm brown fabric which has mellowed with age.

Novelty treen pin cushions were popular during the Victorian period, with small domestic forms such as kettles and teapots produced as both practical sewing tools and decorative objects. Comparable wooden form pin cushions are documented from the mid to late 19th century.
