A beautiful early Victorian hand-crank sewing machine by James G. Weir of London, dating to approximately 1872–1880.

This wonderfully decorative sewing machine features an elaborate open cast-iron framework, finished in black with intricate gilt scrollwork and ornamental detailing.

The machine retains its exposed gearing, hand-operated wheel, brass fittings and distinctive James G. Weir Patent London emblem on the bedplate. The ornate U-shaped spool holder bears the stamped serial number 15484 on its brass plate.

James Galloway Weir established his sewing machine business in London in 1867 and became known for producing compact, affordable machines. His improved designs of the early 1870s incorporated innovative mechanical features, including a patented U-shaped spool holder introduced in 1872.

A particularly attractive example of Victorian engineering, equally appealing as a collector's item or decorative addition to a sewing room, haberdashery collection or period interior.

The machine has not been tested with fabric and thread, so its sewing functionality cannot be guaranteed. Mounted on a polished wooden display base. No original carrying case or box is included.
