A large antique ceramic marmalade jar made by Maling of Newcastle for James Keiller & Sons of Dundee, the celebrated makers of Dundee marmalade. The cream-glazed cylindrical pot carries the classic black transfer-printed Keiller wreath design to the front, reading:

“Grand Medal of Merit Vienna 1873
James Keiller & Sons
Dundee Marmalade
Only Prize Medal for Marmalade
London, 1862”

The underside is impressed Maling Newcastle, identifying the manufacturer.

These substantial ceramic jars were originally everyday commercial packaging for Keiller's marmalade and are now highly decorative pieces of Victorian advertising ware and kitchenalia. This example has particularly attractive, pronounced age-related crazing throughout the glaze, giving it plenty of character.

Condition

Good antique condition with substantial overall crazing to the glaze and associated age-related discolouration, particularly towards the lower part of the pot. There are some surface marks, staining and wear around the rim and base consistent with age and use. The interior has several small dark marks and manufacturing imperfections. The transfer print remains strong and clearly legible.
