Antique Victorian Painted Mussel Shell Velvet Pincushion
A charming and unusual antique pincushion made from a natural mussel shell, dating from the late Victorian period.
The dark shell encloses a richly coloured deep blue velvet pincushion, with several old pins still remaining in place. One side has been delicately hand painted with small pink flowers and green leaves, creating a lovely contrast against the dark natural shell.
The edges are finished with dark braided trim and a small loop remains at one end, likely intended for hanging or carrying.
Shell pincushions were popular decorative sewing accessories during the 19th century and were often associated with seaside souvenirs and handmade keepsakes. The painted floral decoration makes this a particularly appealing example.
