A wonderfully decorative antique pincushion made from natural scallop shells, dating from the late Victorian period.

The pincushion has been constructed from two scallop shells joined around a padded textile centre, with delicate cream needlework worked around the shell edges and contrasting dark thread forming a scalloped decorative border. Around the sides is faded pale pink silk or satin ribbon embellished with small metallic studs or bead-like details, while remnants of the original ribbon ties remain at the top.

These decorative shell pincushions were popular during the 19th century, combining practical sewing accessories with the Victorian fascination for natural materials and handmade keepsakes. They were sometimes produced or brought home as seaside souvenirs.

A particularly charming example with beautifully aged colours and plenty of original detail remaining.

Condition

In genuine antique condition with considerable age-related wear to the textile elements. The silk ribbon is faded, frayed and fragile with areas of loss, and there is wear and some loss to the decorative edging and stitching. Some of the small applied metallic details are missing. The shells have surface marks, natural discolouration and some small edge losses and imperfections consistent with their age. Despite the wear, the pincushion remains together and displays beautifully.
