Antique Victorian The Field of Wheat Educational Nursery Plate 17.25cm

An unusual early Victorian educational nursery plate titled “The Field of Wheat.”

The central black transfer-printed scene depicts two men and a boy examining a growing wheat crop, with fields, mountains and trees in the distance. The words “THE FIELD OF WHEAT” appear beneath the illustration.

The agricultural subject reflects the educational purpose of many early nursery wares, which introduced children to farming, trades, animals and the wider world through detailed printed scenes.

A distinctive brown geometric border encircles the plate, creating a particularly striking contrast with the black-and-white central illustration. The reverse carries a small impressed diamond-shaped mark, although it is not sufficiently clear or distinctive to attribute the plate confidently to a particular pottery.

Dating from approximately 1840–1860, this is an appealing piece of early Victorian childhood, agricultural and social history.
